Wes Bentley Education and Career
Wes earned his high school diploma from Sylvan Hills High School in Sherwood, Arkansas, in 1996. He was a member of Group 29 at the Juilliard School’s Drama Division from 1996 to 2000, but dropped out after a year to pursue his acting career.
Bentley has appeared in a number of films, including American Beauty, The Four Feathers, P2, and Ghost Rider, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. He appeared in the thrillers Dolan’s Cadillac, based on a Stephen King short story, and There Be Dragons, directed by Roland Joffé.
Bentley portrayed Blackheart, a demonic being who was the main antagonist in the 2007 film Ghost Rider.
In 2010, he co-starred with Nina Arianda in the Classic Stage Company’s production of David Ives’ Venus in Fur, which premiered in New York City.
He had a supporting role as gamemaker Seneca Crane in the blockbuster film The Hunger Games in March 2012.
He also starred in the indie film 3 Nights in the Desert, directed by Gabriel Cowan and written by award-winning playwright Adam Chanzit, in which he co-starred with Amber Tamblyn and Vincent Piazza.
Bentley, along with Scott Speedman, was cast in Ryan Murphy’s HBO production Open in June of 2013.
Bentley was promoted to the main cast for the fifth season of American Horror Story, Hotel, starring as Detective John Lowe, after guest-starring in American Horror Story: Freak Show in 2014. In 2016, he starred in the sixth season of Roanoke, in which he played a pivotal role. In 2018, he started playing Jamie Dutton in Yellowstone on the Paramount Network.
The fame he gained as a result of the film ‘American Beauty’ was too much for him, and he became an alcoholic and drug addict. He did some films like The Four Feathers, Carving Out Our Name, Weirdsville, and Soul Survivors while battling his addiction issues and substance abuse, which led to a downfall in his married life.
He was praised for his acting skills once again when he played the lead antagonist in the blockbuster film Ghost Rider. He publicly stated that he did movies in the 2000s solely to earn money to buy drugs. My Big Break, a well-known documentary film, is about him.
Wes Bentley Personal Life
He described his descent into drug addiction, which began almost immediately after his success in American Beauty, in a New York Times article on February 8, 2010. He claimed he kept his addiction hidden from his wife; the couple divorced in 2006, and he moved into an apartment where he began doing drugs full-time. He worked sporadically during this time, just enough to pay his bills and buy drugs.
His addiction began to cause issues on the sets of the films P2 and Weirdsville, and he was arrested in 2008 and ordered to participate in counseling and 12-step programs. However, he relapsed and “continued to use heroin until he was broke.”
He confessed to a friend in July 2009, said: “I’m a drug addict and alcoholic who requires assistance. I’m going to die if I don’t get help “.. He re-entered a 12-step program and, while still sober, believes he is on the road to recovery.
Bentley’s early life as an unknown actor, his sudden fame following American Beauty, his subsequent emotional struggle with fame, and his admission years later that he was recovering from a drug and alcohol addiction are all documented in the documentary My Big Break (2009). In the Off-Broadway premiere of David Ives’ play Venus in Fur, he began to resurrect his career.
