Brené Brown Books

She is the author of five New York Times best-selling books, including The Gifts of Imperfection, Daring Greatly, Rising Strong, Braving the Wilderness, and Dare to Lead, which is the culmination of a seven-year study on courage and leadership.

What inspires one person may come across as a hollow platitude to another, but we all have times in our lives when we need a little boost.

We’ve found a lot of wisdom and comfort from Brené Brown, a research professor whose bestselling books and viral TED Talks spare no truths and get us to reexamine the way we show up in the world, at a time when we’re collectively experiencing so much uncertainty and upheaval.

She is also known as “the vulnerability woman” or “the shame academic,” and it’s a testament to how much her life has changed that she has had a private leadership session with banking executives in the City, an evening in front of a sold-out crowd at Alain de Botton’s School of Life, an all-day workshop training counselors in her methodology, and a slew of interconnected events during a whistlestop few days in Britain.

On the one hand, she now has access to an audience that most academics can only dream about. On the other hand, she appears to be worn out. After my interview, she was supposed to do a photoshoot, but when I catch up with her in her London hotel, she tells me that it was “too much.” She claims that “it’s not me” is part of the problem. I’m a scientist who works in the field of research. It also… to be completely honest with you, I despise the celebrity cult that surrounds my workplace. Isn’t it supposed to be all about work? I’m not a particularly fascinating person. The research is the work, and the research is the work.”

Brené Brown Life Goals

Brené Brown is still a professor. But she’s also an Oprah-approved author who travels the world as a mega speaker. Making sense of these two things appears to be a never-ending challenge. She despises the term “self-help,” she claims. “I’m not sure what it means.” I don’t believe we’re supposed to do it alone. As a researcher, I believe I have a legitimate reaction to those words. “Jesus, where is the evidence to support this?” I ask as I walk through the [bookshop] aisles.

Although she may not want to think of herself as a self-help author, her publishers do. At the very least, it indicates that people are reading her work; her most recent two books were both bestsellers.

Brené Brown believes that we are in the midst of an “epidemic of shame,” one that manifests itself in alcoholism, obesity, addiction, debt, and medication, but that its manifestation is gendered. That the triggers for men and women are different. It’s all about expectations and, in many cases, body image for women. For men, it’s about not being seen as weak.

A Brief Run-Through

Brené Brown is a master of the pause. She understands how to ask a question. Her pause conveys authority and reflection. It makes you feel as if you’ve been heard. “What a great question,” the pause says before imbuing Brown’s eventual response with thoughtful weight.

She began finding patterns of behavior and drawing some basic but uncomfortable conclusions as a result of her “grounded theory” research a methodology for collecting and coding interviews and other data sets including We all fail. But simply ignoring or acknowledging those failures isn’t enough. True leadership can only emerge when we accept our flaws, work to overcome them, and take risks—in Brown’s words, when we are brave and “challenge the false stories we make up when we experience disappointment.”
