Virat Kohli is an Indian cricketer who currently serves as the team’s captain. As a right-handed batter, he represents Delhi in domestic cricket. He also represents Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He is regarded as one of the most talented batsmen of his time. Kohli made his Test debut in 2011 and, by 2013, had secured the label of “ODI specialist” by scoring hundreds against Australia as well as South Africa.

Virat Kohli was born in a Punjabi Hindu household in Delhi around November 5, 1988. Prem Kohli, his father, was a criminal lawyer by profession. His mother is Saroj Kohli, who is a housewife. Vikash Kohli, his older brother, and Bhavna, his older sister, are his siblings. In his childhood, Kohli would just take up his cricket bat, start practicing with it. He also urged his father to bowl at him when he was just three years old.

Kohli was born and reared in Uttam Nagar, where he attended Vishal Bharti Public School. The West Delhi Cricket Academy was founded in 1998, and a nine-year-old Kohli was among its initial students. After Kohli’s neighbors advised him not to play gully cricket instead of taking admission in a professional club, Kohli’s father drove him to the academy. At the same time, Kohli was training at Rajkumar Sharma’s academy and playing matches at the Sumit Dogra Academy around Vasundhara Enclave.

Sharma recounts Kohli’s early days at his academy. He was oozing with talent. It was nearly impossible to keep him silent. He was a natural at everything he did, and I was blown away by his demeanor. Even after his training sessions, he was pretty adamant about not leaving. He moved to Saviour Convent in Paschim Vihar in ninth grade to help with his cricket practice.

Kohli’s father died of a stroke around December 18, 2006, as he was already bedridden for a month.  Kohli stated in an interview in his early years,” My father died when I was young, the family business was struggling, and I lived in a leased apartment. The family went through some difficult times… It’s all ingrained in my mind”.

Kohli began dating Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma in 2013, and the duo quickly got the moniker “Virushka.” Their connection drew much media interest, with rumors and theories circulating because neither openly discussed it. The pair married in a private ceremony in Florence, Italy, on December 11, 2017. Tamika, their baby girl, was born on January 11, 2021.

Kohli revealed in 2018 that he quit eating meat totally to lower his uric acid levels, which caused him to have a cervical spinal problem that affected his finger and, as a result, his batting. He clarified that he is a vegetarian in 2021.

Virat Kohli Professional Life

Kohli made his debut for the Delhi Under-15 team at the Polly Umrigar Trophy around October 2002. He was the leading run-scorer for his team in that tournament, averaging 34.40 runs per inning. He was named captain of the team for the 2003–04 Polly Umrigar Trophy, scoring 390 runs in five innings at an excellent average of 78, which included two centuries as well as two fifties. He was named to the Delhi Under-17 team for the 2003–04 Vijay Merchant Trophy in late 2004. Kohli scored 470 runs in four matches at an average of 117.50, including two centuries and a top score of 251*. Delhi Under-17s won the 2004–05 Vijay Merchant Trophy, with Kohli scoring 757 runs in seven matches at an average of 117.50.

Kohli was picked for the Indian ODI squad for the tour of Sri Lanka and also the Champions Trophy in Pakistan around August 2008. Kohli had only played eight List A matches before the Sri Lankan tour. As a result, his call-up was dubbed a “surprise call-up.” Kohli batted as a makeshift opener throughout the Sri Lankan tour because both openers Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag were injured. 

Kohli appeared in every match of India’s World Cup triumph. In the first encounter against Bangladesh, he managed to score an undefeated 100, his fifth ODI century, and also became the first Indian batsman to achieve a century on his World Cup debut. He had poor scores of 1, 8, 12, and 34  in the next four group matches against South Africa, England, Ireland, and the Netherlands. After scoring 59 against the West Indies, he only managed 24 and 9 against Australia and Pakistan in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, respectively. He scored 35 in the final against Sri Lanka in Mumbai, where he shared an 83-run third-wicket stand with Gambhir after India had lost both openers within the first five overs.

With the most 50+ scores in T20I, Virat Kohli is the leading run-scorer. In the T20 World Cup, he is the only batsman to have been named Player of the Tournament twice. In the 2014 T20 World Cup, he was the leading run-scorer with 319 runs and four fifties.

He has the second-most century in ODIs (43), trailing only Tendulkar (49). Only Tendulkar (100) and Ponting (70) have more centuries in international cricket (71). In terms of innings, he is the fastest player to achieve 10,000 runs in an ODI, taking 54 fewer innings than the previous record of 259 innings. In 2018, he achieved 1000 ODI runs in 11 innings, the fewest innings required to score 1000 runs.

Kohli has admitted to being a superstitious person. As a cricket superstition, he used to wear black wristbands. Before that, he wore the same pair of gloves with which he performed well.  He has been keeping a kara on his right arm since 2012, in addition to a religious black thread.
