Vince Lombardi, born Vincent Thomas Lombardi, was an American professional gridiron football coach who became a national symbol of unwavering determination to win. In nine seasons as head coach of the previously dormant Green Bay Packers (1959–67), he led the team to five National Football League (NFL) championships and, in the last two seasons, to victories in the first two Super Bowl games against the American Football League titleholder.

Lombardi enrolled in the Cathedral College of the Immaculate Conception to pursue a career as a priest. Two years later, Lombardi changed his mind and transferred to St. Francis Preparatory, where he played fullback for the football team. Following graduation, Lombardi went on to play football for Fordham University, where he was a member of the fabled “Seven Blocks of Granite.”

Lombardi went to law school in the evenings while working for a finance firm during the day after graduating magna cum laude from Fordham in 1937. Lombardi changed his career path once more, accepting a teaching and assistant football coaching position at St. Cecilia High School in Englewood, New Jersey. Lombardi married Marie Planitz in 1940, during his successful 8-year stint at St. Cecelia (with whom he had two children, Vince Jr., and Susan).

In 1947, Lombardi joined the coaching staff at his alma mater, Fordham University, and stayed for two years. But, in 1949, Lombardi couldn’t pass up the chance to continue his coaching career at West Point, where he could learn from the great Red Black.
