Martin Luther King Jr. Day (officially Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., and sometimes abbreviated as MLK Day) is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Every year on the third Monday of January, it is observed. King’s actual birthday is January 15, 1929. (which in 1929 fell on a Tuesday). The holiday is similar to those established by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. This holiday falls on the 15th of January and ends on the 21st of January.

King was the Civil Rights Movement’s chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism, protesting racial discrimination in federal and state law. Soon after King’s assassination in 1968, the campaign for a federal holiday in his honor began. The holiday was established by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, and it was first observed three years later. At first, some states refused to observe the holiday as such, instead of calling it something else or combining it with another holiday. For the first time, it was officially observed in all 50 states in 2000.
