After living in Chicago, West attended Polaris School for Individual Education in suburban Oak Lawn, Illinois, where he was raised in a middle-class environment. West moved to Nanjing, China, with his mother when he was ten years old, where she was a Fulbright Scholar teaching at Nanjing University. West was the only foreigner in his class, according to his mother, but he fit in well and quickly picked up the language, though he has since forgotten most of it.
