Everything You Need To Know Before Starting Your Career As A Copywriter

how to become a copywriter

Do you remember the profession of Farhan Akhtar in the movie ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’?

Remember how he was proudly introducing himself as an ad copywriter?

If you had scratched your head a little to understand what ad copywriting is or if you have failed to differentiate between copyright-er and copywriter- we were on the same boat.

But thankfully, there is no more confusion in my life about copywriting. And before anything else, I want to burst the bubble that copywriting and copyright-ing are two different things.

Copyright-ing Vs. Copywriting

Copyright is a legal term that simply implies protecting an author’s work. It is considered under intellectual property providing exclusive publication distribution and usage rights for the author.

Once the content is copyrighted it cannot be used or published by anyone else without the author’s consent.

What Is Copywriting?

Well, that is what we’re gonna talk about today. As the term copywriting is very homophonic to copyright-ing, most people misinterpret the meaning. And you will be thrilled to know that I per se started my career as a copywriter.

If you ask Google about the 21st-century definition of copywriting, it will show like:

“Write-ups that help you make a sale, either overtly or covertly.”

But I want to make it a little simpler for you.

Anything that you write for a business is “copy.” And all the business copies that exist are to make sales. Because if they don’t help make sales, businesses won’t continue creating that sort of copy.

Thus, business writing is copywriting, and the person who writes those copies is a copywriter. Everything that you write as a copywriter helps make a sale in some way. Even if it’s a blog post, your copy makes money for the company you are writing.

In the modern world, copywriting is all about strategically crafting and publishing reader-centric words online and offline to get people to take some form of action.

How the Traditional Copywriting Looked Like?

Copywriting is not a 21st-century fad as it existed forever. The old-timers would describe copywriting as writing that gives them the selly-sell. Previously the copy pulled no punches. Every time there is a copy, it is selling something. The minute you will finish reading the copy, it wants you to buy something.

Types of Copywriting

You may consider a copywriter to be someone who can apply their skills of playing with words to any type of business writing. In reality, there are at least 3 to 7 different types of copywriters in the B2B marketing world. And it’s extremely rare to find a solo person with a whole range of capabilities.

Here Are Top 4 Types of Copywriter Out There:

  • Creative Copywriter:

Creative copywriters are the magical gift of communicating an idea in a short and memorable phrase. They are the type of person; Imran was in the movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. They are good at writing headlines, taglines, ad copies, and bringing out creative campaign concepts.

  • Digital Copywriter

Digital copywriters are responsible for writing business write-ups that get website visitors and app users. They also make the visitors click on the right things and enter the right information. Have you ever noticed the CTA buttons saying, ‘start your free trial’ or ‘start my free trial’?

Those are written by digital copywriters. Digital copywriters are good at calls to action, social media copies, button copies, page navigation copies, etc.

  • Marketing Copywriter

The marketing copywriters are part writers and another part psychologists. They can immerse themselves in buyer personas to understand the target audience better. They use their insights to write copies to inspire, educate, terrify, and guide the prospective audience. Marketing copywriters are good at email campaigns, E-books, and video scripts.

  • Technical Copywriters

Mostly, copywriters are arts or mass communication graduates. Still, they struggle when it comes actually to understand the nuts and bolts and bits and bytes of a few products they’re promoting. Technical writers are a hybrid of techie and writer. They are good at datasheets, FAQs, technical instructions, and knowledge base articles.

What Skills Do You Need to Become A Copywriter?

Copywriting is a great career choice as the writers are paid the bulk sum of money for creating the copies. But as no good thing is available for free, you have to have some skills to become a successful copywriter. Followings are some common skillsets you need, regardless of the type of copywriter you want to become.

  • English Language Skill: You need to have a high level of English language skill to design the correct sentence structure, word choice, uses your punctuations, and so on. Every copywriter pays particular attention to grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • An eye for Detail: As a copywriter, you also need to have the ability to spot errors in your own work. You have to become your own proofreader and copy editor before sending a copy to the client.
  • Research Skills: You have to have the knowledge of carrying out research in the most wonderful way. A copywriter knows the internet’s proper use to understand the product or service inside out before writing.
